The talented young cast of The Commitments, who had been plucked from working-class obscurity by the film’s director Alan Parker, became overnight stars when the film, adapted from Roddy Doyle’s novel, was a boxoffice success.
The soundtrack to the film, which included soul staples such as In The Midnight Hour, Try a Little Tenderness and Mustang Sally, went on to sell 12 million copies, and ensured their fame burned bright.
The Audience was nominated for a number of Olivier Master Card Awards on Tuesday, including best new play, best actress, best director, best costume and best supporting actor for Richard Mc Cabe’s study of Harold Wilson.
He’s taking a pre-arranged break from playing Zac, the energetic choreographer in A Chorus Line at the London Palladium, to perform a week’s cabaret residency for Live At The Hippodrome (the old Talk Of The Town) from April 22 through April 27.
He continued to tour, basing himself first in Los Angeles and then New York before moving to Copenhagen where he lived with a Danish girlfriend for 10 years.
Once won Hansard and his co-star (and real-life partner) Markéta Irglová an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2007, and a stage version went on to become a hit on Broadway, winning eight Tony awards.
